Evgenia (Jenny) Haugen, RMT - Registered Massage Therapist & Craniosacral Practitioner

Carpal tunnel syndrome is the inflammation or compression of the median nerve (innervates the flexor muscles of the forearm and wrist) within the carpal tunnel of the wrist. When the nerve is compromised it causes tingling, numbness and pain in the thumb, index, middle and half of the ring finger. It may present in one or both hands and may also involve difficulty grasping or carrying objects.
Pain is aggravated by movement, is often worse at night and can even wake you up. Carpal tunnel syndrome has different causes and is related to repetitive flexion and extension of the wrist. It can also be due to swelling, bony callous formations, diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis, work and sports related stress on the wrists.
Massage Therapy is a very effective treatment to relieve the symptoms of carpal tunnel syndrome. It can maintain range of motion and help to improve tissue health. Each session focuses on techniques to the wrist, hand, arm, shoulder and neck. Remedial exercises such as strengthening and stretches, hydrotherapy and education on proper posture will also be addressed. The number of massage therapy sessions needed will vary and depend on how severe the problem is. Other treatment options at our clinic for carpal tunnel syndrome include physiotherapy, acupuncture and chiropractic.
