Cosmetic Treatments with Acupuncture

Hong Ma, R. Ac., R.TCMP - Acupuncturist & TCM Practitioner

Cosmetic acupuncture, also known as acupuncture face-lift or facial rejuvenation, is a form of acupuncture that is applied to reduce fine lines and wrinkles. Cosmetic acupuncture has been practiced for thousands of years. The Empresses of ancient China knew to use the powers of Chinese medicine to enhance their beauty and consequently, the acupuncture face-lift has its origin from thousands of years ago. Currently, new variations and techniques have evolved as cosmetic acupuncture becomes more popular in the western world. Starting off in Hollywood and catching up in Canada, due to its reputedly anti-aging effects, this procedure is an alternative cosmetic treatment without the danger of side effects such as swelling, scarring or a lengthy recovery time.

Cosmetic acupuncture is an effective, non-surgical treatment to reduce the signs of aging. This specialized technique stimulates the circulation of the blood, Qi and lymph systems of the face and body. Collagen production is also stimulated by means of tiny needles that attract Qi and blood to the area. This tones, rejuvenates, promotes muscle elasticity and enlivens the skin. It tightens the muscles and softens or reduces lines and dark circles under the eyes. The treatment is focused on reducing the signs of aging and it is applied to the areas of the face prone to wrinkles. The application of the needles is generally done across several meridian lines, including several not on the face, across which the body's Qi flows. There are also several other acupuncture points including the forehead, cheeks, ears, chin, around the eyes and along the wrinkles themselves. The insertion of needles causes blood to circulate throughout the face, producing the following effects:

  • Restore the balance of body chemicals, such as serotonin, endorphin, adrenaline and other hormones

  • Alleviate stress

  • Improve circulation of blood and lymph within the face

  • Facilitate collagen production

  • Enhance muscle tone

  • Increase dermal contraction

  • Tighten the pores of the skin

Additional benefits to the treatments are improved sleep, better digestion and stress reduction.
