What is Naturopathic Medicine?

naturopathic medicineNaturopathic Medicine is a distinct system of primary care that addresses the root cause of illness or disease and promotes health and healing using natural therapies. Naturopathic doctors are highly educated primary care providers who integrate medical diagnostics with a broad range of natural therapies.

The body is a complex integrated system that responds and reacts to everything, such as thoughts, emotions, foods, physical trauma and environment. A Naturopathic Doctor understands the value of listening carefully to their patients so they understand the complexity of each individual and to provide the needed support and various treatment options to reach personal health goals.

What can I expect from my first visit?

The initial visit will allow time for:

• Establishing a detailed understanding of the patient
• Obtaining a complete history, including current health status and contributing factors to any complaints
• A physical examination and any recommended laboratory and diagnostic testing

Are Naturopathic Doctors regulated in Ontario?

Naturopathic doctors are the only regulated health professional in the field of natural medicine in Ontario. They are regulated under the 1925 Drugless Therapy Act and are registered (licensed) by the Board of Directors of Drugless Therapy – Naturopathy (BDDT-N). The BDDT-N functions to ensure that NDs are properly qualified to practice naturopathic medicine and that they follow appropriate standards of practice.

What training do Naturopathic Doctors have?

Naturopaths have a minimum of 7 years post secondary education. They must also have a minimum of 3 year premedical University studies and 4 year full time studies in an accredited naturopathic school. As well, 1500 hours of clinical residency are required along with two sets of extensive licensing board exams which are required in all regulated provinces.

Nutritional Consulting

Nutritional Consulting helps to identify the underlying cause of many health complaints. By treating the root of the problem, we can allow the body to rebalance and heal itself naturally.

By improving absorption of nutrients and supporting our digestive system as well as our organs of elimination & detoxification, the healing process can begin. The result is:

• More energy
• Enhanced immunity
• The ability to handle stress more effectively
• Natural weight loss
• The alleviation of many health conditions and complaints

Intravenous Therapy

We usually get nutrients through our diet...however there are some instances in which a great diet does not translate to proper nutrition on a cellular level. The advantage of IV administration is that the nutrients bypass the stomach and go directly into the bloodstream where they are able to rapidly reach cells.

IV protocols are tailored to each individual patient and can be effective in many situations.

• Cancer
• Migraines & tension headaches
• Fibromyalgia
• Chronic fatigue
• Allergies
• Asthma
• Parkinson’s disease
• Macular degeneration

• Depression
• Chronic disease
• Detoxification
• Chronic or acute muscle spasms
• Acute viral illnesses and colds
• Detoxification
• Enhancing overall well-being

IV vitamin therapy is an aggressive treatment that can provide effective results which may not be found in other therapies. It nourishes the cells and helps restore the body’s inherent healing mechanisms.

Homeopathy

Homeopathy is a complete system of natural medicine that uses various plant, mineral or animal products in very small doses to stimulate the body’s natural ability to heal. The homeopathic remedies prescribed will act deeply and curatively to stimulate the body’s own defense mechanisms rather than suppressing symptoms. Through its 200 plus years history, homeopathy has demonstrated its efficiency in treating diseases for which other forms of medicine have little to offer.

Because homeopathic remedies are natural, efficient, extremely safe, and free of side effects – it has successfully been used to treat children, pregnant women, extremely debilitated patients and pets.
