What is Naturopathic Medicine?

Naturopathic Medicine is a distinct system of primary care that addresses the root cause of illness or disease and promotes health and healing using natural therapies. Naturopathic doctors are highly educated primary care providers who integrate medical diagnostics with a broad range of natural therapies.

naturopathic medicineThe body is a complex integrated system that responds and reacts to everything like thoughts, emotions, foods, physical trauma and environment. A Naturopathic Doctor understands the value of taking the time to listen and understand the complexity of each individual and to provide the needed support and various treatment options to reach personal health goals.

What can I expect from my first visit?

The initial visit allows time to establish a detailed understanding of the patient. There is time for a complete history, including current health status and contributing factors to any complaints. Time is allowed for physical examination and any recommended laboratory and diagnostic testing.

Are Naturopathic Doctors Regulated in Ontario?

Naturopathic doctors are the only regulated health professional in the field of natural medicine in Ontario. ND’s are regulated in Ontario under the 1925 Drugless Therapy Act and are registered (licensed) by the Board of Directors of Drugless Therapy – Naturopathy (BDDT-N). The BDDT-N functions to ensure that NDs are properly qualified to practice naturopathic medicine and that they follow appropriate standards of practice.

What training do Naturopathic Doctors have?

Naturopaths have a minimum of 7 years post secondary education. A minimum of 3 year premedical University studies, 4 year full time studies in an accredited naturopathic school, and 1500 hours of clinical residency are required. As well, two sets of extensive licensing board exams are required in all regulated provinces.
