A Woman’s Guide to Preventing Holiday Weight Gain
Dr. Samantha Ristimaki, BSc, ND
Doctor of Naturopathic Medicine
Have you ever noticed that there’s a magic switch that goes off during the holiday season that suddenly gives people permission to indulge in sweets, chocolates and endless holiday foods? It’s not until January that the light bulb goes off to say oops… Year after year, it never fails. Gyms and weight loss programs thrive on people’s New Years resolutions to loose weight.
Instead of falling into the same trap year after year, why not try breaking the cycle and prevent the holiday bulge.
1. Tight pants or a skinny dress
You will be less likely to overeat at a holiday party if you are wearing something fitted. If your clothes feel tighter as the night goes on, it’s your cue to stop overeating!
2. Carry something to your event
Adding a clutch to your evening outfit will not only make you look more fashionable but it will also help keep your hands busy.
3. Eat Breakfast
Mom was right: breakfast is the most important meal of the day! Not only does it help increase your metabolism in the morning but if you don’t fuel your body, you will be starving later and won’t hesitate to indulge in holiday treats.
4. Work it girl
It’s so easy to get caught up in the hustle and bustle of the holiday season and get out of your gym routine. Be creative and stay active by parking further away at the mall, taking a walk at lunch and using the stairs instead of an escalator.
5. Vegetables first
Start with salad and veggies. Filling up on vegetables will make you feel more satisfied on fewer calories.
6. Enjoy what you love
You don’t have to pass up your favourite holiday treats. Choose smaller portions of things that you will truly enjoy. Practice being a slower eater and savour every morsel.

Recent Research on Osteoporosis
Dr. Shima Shahidy, (Hon) B.Sc., DC
Chiropractor & Graston Technique Provider
It is important to continually update our information on diseases, their treatments and risk factors since information is constantly changing. It is also important to know that many of the things we consider “common sense” are supported by appropriate research. Age, gender and ethnicity are amongst the many factors that determine our risks for a particular illness or condition. Men and women do not always show the same symptoms nor do they respond to the same treatments for many conditions. Also, what we do in our youth has a profound impact on our health in later years. In this article we’re going to touch on osteoporosis.
Osteoporosis is now the most serious condition that affects women causing premature disability. Loss of bone mass happens “quietly” with no symptoms and can lead to fractures. Evidence shows that despite the fact that we see the effects of osteoporosis in the elderly, it really is a disease of the young. Women reach their peak bone mass as early as 16 years of age therefore your nutrition and lifestyle habits prior to that are extremely important. Research has shown that a healthy lifestyle, most importantly weight bearing exercise has a protective effect on early osteopenia (low bone mineral density not severe enough to be classified as osteoporosis) in the hips and spine. Children are far less active today and a greater effort needs to be made to encourage adequate exercise and promote proper nutrition from an early age to help prevent the debilitating effects of premature bone loss.
For older adults already suffering from osteopenia or osteoporosis, fractures are a cause of disability and even death. Hip fractures can have severe consequences for mobility, independence and even mental health. One low cost preventative strategy is vitamin D supplementation. The most recent research has shown that a vitamin D dose of 700-800 IU’s a day along with approximately 700 mg of calcium reduced the risk of hip fracture by 25% when compared with taking calcium alone. What does this mean for you? Consult your health care practitioner to assess whether you would benefit from changing your supplement intake.
If you are concerned about your risk for bone loss, speak to your family physician, chiropractor or naturopath to discuss your options and find out more information at the Osteoporosis Canada website http://www.osteoporosis.ca/.
