Put Your Best Foot Forward - Don’t Let a Fall Get You Down
Dr. Shima Shahidy, (Hon) B.Sc., DC
Chiropractor & Graston Technique Provider
There is a surge in the population pyramid in Canada and it is due to the aging Baby Boomers.
This aging population comes with its own health implications and one of the most prevalent
is injury due to falls. One-third of independently living Canadians over 65 will fall at least once a
year. The complications that arise from a fall can lead to disability and even death. Preventing
falls is critical to maintaining optimal quality of life and protecting your independence.
What can you do to decrease your risk?
• Regular exercise and proper nutrition can help increase strength and energy. Health Canada
recommends at least 30 minutes of exercise a day for seniors.
• Don’t skip meals and follow Canada’s Food Guide for maintaining a healthy diet. You may need to supplement your diet with certain vitamins and minerals. This is dependent on your health and whether or not you are taking any medications. Consult your health care practitioner for recommendations on multivitamins, calcium, magnesium, vitamin D and other supplements which may be appropriate for you.
Fall proof your environment!
• Stairs are a major danger, especially if there are no handrails and poor lighting. Make sure to
take your reading glasses off when climbing stairs.
• Watch out for stumbling hazards (i.e., rugs, bags, shoes, even pets!)
• Clean up spills quickly to prevent slipping.
• Use non-slip mats in the bathroom and shower.
Tips
• Wear shoes with good support and non-slip soles.
• Have vision and hearing checked annually.
• Review your medications and nutritional supplements with your doctor or pharmacist since
some side effects may increase your risk for falls.
You may also contact a doctor of chiropractic in your community to find out more about “Best
Foot Forward”; a public education program from the Canadian Chiropractic Association designed
to help seniors and those who care for them.

Water for Your Health
Andrea Nederveen-Bax
Registered Massage Therapist
After recieving a massage treatment many therapists will recommend drinking water to flush your body. We all know that drinking 6-8 glasses of water a day is the recommended amount for the average person, but why drink so much.
While doing some personal research I came upon a website called www.watercure.com put together by Dr. Batmanghlidj author of the book, Water for Health, for Healing for Life. It explains our bodies need for water in a very simple way. In an interview Dr. Batmanghlidj explains how water works in your body, and how water actually reduces pain in your body.
In 1982 Dr. Batmanghlidj went to the University of Pennsylvania. Here he asked the question why does the pharmaceutical industry insist on using antihistamines as pain medication? After some research in reguards to the role of histamine in the body, he came to the conclusion that since histamine is a neurotransmitter in charge of water regulation and drought management in the body, when the body manifests pain it is in fact indicating dehydration.
So the next time you are feeling pain (in the article Dr. B. talks about abdominal pain), instead of reaching for the perscribed antihistamines, try drinking a glass of water or two and give your body a few minutes to adjust to its rehydration. Your pain may deminish and even be relieved all together.
I would like to encourage everyone to look at www.watercure.com and try hydrating your body throughout the day and not just when you feel thirsty. Drinking water is just another way of using prevetative measures to keep your body healthy and happy.
