Shima Shahidy - the newest member of our wellness staff
and a welcome addition to our chiropractic department.

Dr. Shahidy attended the University
of Waterloo for Kinesiology, specializing in Ergonomics.
She later graduated from the Canadian Memorial Chiropractic
College with clinic honours. Shima is a certified Graston®
Provider and will be certified in Acupuncture early
in 2009.
Dr. Shahidy has a keen interest in the
effects that jobs, hobbies and athletic involvement
have on her patients’ bodies. She has treated
a variety of conditions both acute and chronic and is
pleased to offer a new service at Wellness for the Body
called Graston® Technique, which uses specially
crafted instruments to isolate and treat injured tissue.
A black belt in karate and a former
martial arts competitor, Dr. Shahidy was inspired to
become a chiropractor through her own experiences as
a chiropractic patient.

Think
Twice Before You Buy Your Next Bottle of Vitamins

 You
may eat right and exercise, but if you are like most
people living in the GTA, your lifestyle leaves a lot
to be desired. Fortunately, supplements can fill some
of the nutritional gaps and help you function optimally.
But, the sheer number of products available can be overwhelming
and you may wonder “Where do I begin?”
Before running to your local drug store
or hitting the vitamin isle during your next trip to
Costco think twice about the quality of what you are
buying.
Did you know?
1. Companies are not required
to list the ingredients if they aren’t added
at the time the product is packaged into the final
dosage form!
Companies hire vitamin manufacturers
to make pills for them that they package with their
own labeling. What you won’t see on the label
are any potentially allergenic filler, binder or lubricant.
Your label could read 400IU of vitamin D. It’s
actually composed of 0.1% Vitamin D diluted in a base
of Dicalcium Phosphate, Lactose, Acacia, BHT, Sodium
Benzoate and Scorbic Acid because it was cheaper than
using pure vitamin D.
2. Other ingredients are
often added during the final stage of packaging that
may be hypoallergenic.
Look on the label for a list of “other
ingredients” that may not be good for you such
as:
Lactose – May cause bloating
and diarrhea
Magnesium Stearate – lubricant made of large fat
that can affect absorption
Sodium Lauryl Sulfate – chemical added as solubilizing
agent
Yellow #5 Lake (tartrazine) – coloring
Propylene glycol – a plasticizer
3. Lubricants used in product
production can affect the absorption of the nutrient.
Look for stearic acid, magnesium stearate,
and calcium stearate on the label. They are often layers
over the nutrient to enable the tableting and encapsulating
machines to run more smoothly - good for the machine
and bad for you!
