Calais
Irwin, RMT
Calais is a graduate of The Canadian
Therapeutic College. She has participated in a student
outreach at Joseph Brant Hospital in Burlington as part
of her massage therapy training. During that time Calais
gained experience treating patients with ailments such
as Parkinson’s, multiple
sclerosis
and strokes.
Calais’ interest in the alternative health care
field began when she was 15. At that time her own injuries
and headaches began to take a
toll on her health, and
she decided to look for an alternative to prescription
drugs. After seeing a massage therapist, Calais knew
her career path would involve alternative medicine and
she has been working toward that goal ever
since.

Chiropractic
and Pregnancy:
What can chiropractic care do for me?
Dr. Carole Smith,
B.A., DC
Why would I need chiropractic
care during pregnancy?
During pregnancy, there is an increased
strain on a woman’s body due to the excess weight
gain, as well as the physical stresses of the baby’s
position within the womb. Over 60% of women will experience
low back pain during their pregnancy, especially during
the third trimester when the baby’s head is pressing
against a woman’s back. Chiropractic treatment
for low back pain related to pregnancy is a safe and
effective alternative to over-the-counter and prescription
drugs. Chiropractic care has been shown not only help
relieve back pain occurring in pregnancy, but may also
decrease delivery time and labour pain.
What are some causes of back
pain during pregnancy?
• Increased ligament laxity due
to the relaxin hormone
• Increased weight gain and forward
center of gravity
• Poor body mechanics and postural
habits
• Nerve and vessel impingement
due to mechanical pressure
What will my chiropractor do
to help me?
• Spinal Adjustments: Chiropractic
adjustments are used to help decrease the pain that
originates from the joints of body, or muscle spasms.
Adjustments are also used to help correct biomechanical
dysfunctions, and keep the nervous system free from
irritation.
• Soft Tissue Treatment: Chiropractors
often use various soft tissue therapies such as trigger
point work, mobilizations and massage to work on muscles
and help them to relax.
• Postural Correction: Chiropractors
give postural advice that can help minimize the amount
of stress placed on the body, and decrease the risk
of injury and discomfort.
• Exercise: Women, who remain
physically active during pregnancy, are better able
to tolerate labour and delivery. Chiropractors can provide
exercises and stretches for use during pregnancy that
will help maintain muscle tone, strength and endurance,
and will also help prevent low back pain and maintain
spinal adjustments.
What can I do to help prevent
back pain during pregnancy?
• Be proactive: Seek treatment
for your back pain, and do exercises to strengthen muscles
and decrease injury.
• Don’t try to do too much:
Although you should remain as active as possible during
pregnancy, you will not be able to put the same intensity
into your normal activities. You may find that prolonged
standing may cause you to fatigue sooner than it used
to, so make sure you also get plenty of rest.
• Use proper lifting techniques:
When lifting, don't bend from the waist. Instead, squat
with your back straight, keep the object close to you,
and use your leg muscles to lift.
• Consult your health care provider:
Your midwife, physician and chiropractor can all work
together to help maximize your health during pregnancy.

Preventing
Winter Falls
Calais
Irwin, RMT
We’ve
all experienced the pain and aggravation of slipping
on ice. In fact in Ontario, over 18,000 injuries reported
every year are due to slips and falls and the average
time away from work is 6 weeks. Here are a few tips
to help prevent you from suffering a fall.
• Wear appropriate footwear! Leave the high
heels and big chunky soled shoes at home. Or bring
them with you and change once you’ve arrived
safely. After all, those heels won’t look so
cute once you’ve stuffed your swollen foot into
them.
• Make sure to salt or sand your walkway.
• Watch where you walk. Gloomy overcast days cause
less contrast in surfaces and make ice patches harder
to see.
If you happen to be unfortunate enough to fall, ice
any injuries a.s.a.p. to help prevent swelling. And
if you’re not feeling better in a few days,
it’s time to see your Massage Therapist or Chiropractor
for a proper assessment.
