Naturopathic
Medicine: Helping You Better Understand Your Health
Dr. Samantha
Ristimaki, BSc, ND
(Doctor of Naturopathic Medicine)
Naturopathic
Medicine treats all forms of health concerns: from pediatric
to geriatric, from acute irritation to chronic illness,
and from physical to psychological concerns. The approach,
philosophy and training of naturopathic doctors set
this type of medicine apart from other forms of health
care.
There are typically three types of
patients that seek Naturopathic Medical care:
1. Patients that are looking for disease
prevention and health promotional strategies. Individuals
that recognize that health does not just happen by chance;
they understand that it is a life-long process that
involves a clear understanding of the factors that affect
health and how to deal with them on a daily basis.
2. Patients that have a range of symptoms
that they have been unable to address on their own or
with the help of other medical practitioners. With Naturopathic
Medicine’s broad understanding of health and the
relationship between all the factors that influence
health, naturopathic doctors are often able to offer
a new perspective and provide safe and effective ways
to restore health.
3. Patients that have been diagnosed
with an illness and are looking for alternative treatments.
Naturopathic Medicine is very effective in improving
quality of life for those patients that are looking
to combine conventional and naturopathic treatments
with the aim of minimizing side effects to drugs, surgery
or conventional treatments.
The naturopathic philosophy is to stimulate
the healing power of the body and to treat the root
cause of disease. For many patients, this difference
in approach to health provides them with a new perspective
and awareness. By addressing the root causes of disease
and using the appropriate use of natural therapies many
patients with chronic illness have found tremendous
benefits.

Introducing
the Newest Member of Our Wellness Staff
Andrea Antaya,
RMT, Dipl. S.T.
Andrea
is a Registered Massage Therapist, Shiatsu Therapist,
and Reiki Practitioner. In her mid 20’s, when
she was first introduced to Chinese Medicine, she decided
to approach life from a different perspective. This
combined with the strong will to join the alternative
healthcare field led her to the Shiatsu School of Canada
in Toronto where she studied Shiatsu for two years.
Her training uniquely blended Eastern and Western medicine
and included extensive hands on teaching.
In 2005 the decision was made to expand
her knowledge of Swedish Massage as she attended and
graduated from the Canadian Therapeutic College. She
also received her Reiki Level II training during this
time.
